STATEMENT
HONG Yong-Xin (b.1993) was born in Yonghe, New Taipei City. She holds an MFA from the Department of Painting and Calligraphy Arts at National Taiwan University of the Arts, specializing in Mineral Pigment Painting Painting.
Her practice primarily employs glue color, mineral pigments, and botanical dyes. For a long time, she has focused on the ambiguous and complex relationship between humans and animals—from daily companionship, domestication, and gazing in urban life to their recruitment and utilization in historical narratives. Her works carry a gentle yet alienated atmosphere, maintaining a tension between cuteness and cruelty. Her art has been featured in numerous art fairs and recognized by prestigious awards, including the Taoyuan and Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibitions. Her works are held in private collections across Germany, Japan, Denmark, Hong Kong, and Macau. In 2026, she is invited to hold a solo exhibition in Japan.
CONCEPT
By imitating the animal depictions in ancient paintings, I once again experience the interaction and awe between humans, nature, and animals. Through features such as half-closed eyes or bared teeth, combined with earth tones and archaic textures, I employ dramatic techniques to present the subjectivity and sense of power that animals possess in nature.
I favor the layering and infiltration of natural earth pigments and animal glue. Coupled with the flux of time, these materials allow the works to exhibit traces of weathering—akin to wood or stone—endowing them with the mottled charm of ancient civilizations, murals, and folk art. Stylistically, I integrate the linear decorations of medieval manuscripts and Middle Eastern murals with the 'Xieyi' (freehand) techniques of ancient East Asian art. This fusion allows the works to evoke diverse imaginations and interpretations in every viewer. To me, creation is a process of coexisting with time and nature; the works change subtly with the environment and time, becoming a field of continuous generation and imaginative inspiration.
