HSIA, Ai-Hua was born in Taipei in 1973 and graduated from the Department of Sculpture at the National Taiwan University of Arts in 2000. He furthered his studies at the Okinawa Prefectural University of Arts in Japan, specializing in sculpture in the Environmental Modeling Research Institute, and obtained his master's degree in 2003. Since graduating, he has been dedicated to his career as a full-time artist.
His works primarily employ the technique of lifelike dry lacquer, with the content revolving around the subconscious world of individuals. He expresses his creations through various forms such as sculpture, two-dimensional art, and installations.
A significant milestone in his artistic career includes being awarded the ACC Fellowship in 2008, leading him to artist residencies at the Headlands Center for the Arts in the United States and in New York. In the same year, he was selected as an artist-in-residence at the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in Japan. The following year, he participated in the Ohta International Sculpture Art Festival in Japan and was invited as a resident artist. In 2010, he received the support of the Ministry of Culture and became an artist-in-residence at the International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) in New York, where he held a solo exhibition at WHITE BOX. Subsequently, he was invited to participate in an international art festival in Romania, creating art installations at the Rasnov Citadel, and in 2019, he was an artist-in-residence at the Haaz Rezso Museum in Romania, participating in a group exhibition.
During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, he was invited by the Nishinomiya Comprehensive Cultural Center in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, to hold a solo exhibition on the theme of "The Forest of Regeneration," providing spiritual healing for the residents of Nishinomiya facing pandemic challenges. Due to the significant response, in 2022, he was invited by the Tokyo Sakuragi Gallery to present an exhibition on the theme of "Golden Clouds," offering local residents a display to move beyond the pandemic towards a brighter future.
