STATEMENT
Wang Ting-Yu, born in 1981 in Taipei and currently based in Taichung, is a full-time artist working primarily in painting and sculpture. The imagery in his works often draws from astronomy, cartography, the medieval era, and mythology. At its core, his practice reflects on the spatial relationships constructed within the worlds these images create.

He received the Taipei Art Award in 2008 and the Kaohsiung Fine Arts Award in 2010. His works have also been collected by the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts and by the Art Bank Taiwan.
CONCEPT
Across both painting and sculpture, his works incorporate informational characteristics formed by images that originate elsewhere, responding to the essential nature of image transmission symbolized by Gutenberg’s printing press.

I often feel that I am not truly practicing Fine Art, but producing documents. My works are not expressions of natural phenomena; rather, they present the visual forms shaped by the information of our time. What I frequently refer to as the “framework” or the “interface” is, to me, the very structure through which we come to understand the world.

I often feel that things in the world resemble small components attached to the sprues of a plastic model kit. The sprues that connect these parts may in fact be the more real existence, while what we take to be reality is, by comparison, even more illusory.
