Chan Shih-Tai (b. 1971, Taipei) graduated from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Carrara, Italy, in 2011. Working primarily with stone, his practice focuses on the subtle relationships between form, body, and time.
He has participated in numerous international sculpture symposiums and exhibited in Taiwan, Italy, Portugal, and Korea. In recent years, his notable exhibitions include solo and group shows in Taipei, Taichung, and Tainan, as well as the Seoul International Sculpture Exhibition. He currently lives and works in Taiwan.
CONCEPT
Chan Shih-Tai’s stone sculptures are characterized by a restrained and minimalist formal language that echoes the structural clarity of modernist architecture. Beneath their rational geometric appearances, the surfaces retain subtle traces of hand carving, allowing warmth, tactility, and the passage of time to emerge within otherwise composed forms. Rather than imposing force upon the material, Chan approaches stone with acute sensitivity, responding intuitively to its weight, texture, and imperfections, and allowing the material itself to guide the creative process.
For the artist, sculpting is an embodied act that unfolds gradually through time, much like walking. Bodily movement, perception, and thought resonate with one another, extending into a duration shaped by environmental conditions—shifting light, surrounding sounds, or the flow of air. These elements are not depicted directly, yet they quietly permeate the work, becoming latent components embedded within the stone.
Chan describes his working method as a form of “grooming” or preparation—an almost non - invasive sequence of subtle, deliberate gestures. Through this process, layers of material are carefully revealed rather than transformed, allowing the inherent qualities of the stone to surface while simultaneously registering traces of the artist’s presence and state of mind. What may initially appear as flaws or irregularities are embraced as unexpected encounters, opening space for imagination and multiple possibilities. Through sculpture, Chan rearticulates the richness of stone as both a physical substance and a vessel of lived experience.
